Training on AI in collaboration with NeGD, MeitY for Officials of Accounts Department.

Given the vision for AI implementation by the Accounts Departments in IR shared by Member Finance during PFAs Conference held on 26.02.2026, capacity building of the staff and officers in AI is being undertaken in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), GOI. These trainings are being held by the Capacity Building Division of NeGD at their state of the art training facility at NeGD Learning Centre at NOIDA.

These Trainings are being conducted in two broad Verticals Vertical I being physical on-site trainings at the NeGD Learning Space & Vertical II being online VCs for awareness generation. Under Vertical I, currently underway, Program I is a Two-Days Training Session meant for staff of Accounts and IT cadres and Program II is a Three-Days Training Session meant for Officers of JS/SS/JAS/SG.  

With both Accounts as well as IT Cadre staff being trained together in Program I of Vertical I, the objective is to have an AI trained ground level base cohort of technical and non-technical staff available in each Railway unit aware about AI related information, its applications & tools so as to be in readiness to ideate, identify, build use-cases & to take on AI projects/use-cases for implementation. With these initiatives for capacity building for AI preparedness, it is envisaged to have a significantly AI aware & trained Accounts cadre to be future ready.

Progress: Under Program I of Vertical I of these trainings, up to 15.07.2026, 169 staff of Accounts and IT Cadre in Batches I, II & III have already been trained. The dates for the upcoming Batches IV (August 11-12, 2026) and Batch V (September 16-17, 2026) have been shared for seeking nominations. These are monthly trainings which are being held in Batches of 50-60 IR Accounts & IT Cadre staff from across all Zones/PUs/Metro.

The Agenda for the 2-Days training is quite comprehensive. It covers several topics, including –an overview of emerging technologies & their present day use across sectors and in daily life; ML, DL, NLP, Narrow AI vs. General AI; how AI works – algorithms to models; LLMs, Sovereign LLMs, tokens; Live Demos of Chat GPT/Microsoft Copilot, etc.; prompt engineering – learning how to ask good questions, learn summarizing documents, note-making, drafting; Excel AI features, OCR & document digitalization – Hands on Demos of digital tools; data-driven decision making – Dashboards, KPI monitoring – guided walk-through on Power BI; DPDP Act – Safe & responsible use of AI; Basic coding with help of AI, AI Infrastructure – Compute, AI Kosh.

Staff has expressed immense satisfaction at being given an opportunity to be trained in AI at this professional facility.

Under Program 2 of Vertical I, 3-Days training programs for Officers upto JAG/SG level will be held. Batch I (Officers) is w.e.f. July 29-31, 2026. Watch this space for more about this training..

Latest Update: Batch III of 59 Staff from across 17 Railways (10 Zones, 6 PUs, Kolkata Metro) was trained from July 14th-15th, 2026. The cohort includes 11 women participants as well from NFR, ICF, PLW, ER and NR. Ten teams presented different use-cases. The Team comprising NER, NCR, NR & RCF secured the First Position with their presentation on NPS & PRAN Monitoring Dashboard. The Second Position was shared jointly by Team ICF which presented on the Coach Costing Tracking System (CCTS) and Team SR which presented a use case for application of AI for PVC calculation.

One of the highlights of Batch III Training has been the interaction done with the participants by CEO of NeGD, Shri. Nand Kumarum, IAS. Apart from sharing his insights about AI and its applications in the government sector, he enquired about the kinds of use-cases the officials would like to take up in their respective work places.
