Accounts Department advances AI Capacity Building through collaboration with NeGD, MeitY

A structured capacity-building programme on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications is being undertaken for officers and staff of the Accounts Department in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The initiative follows the vision for AI implementation in the Accounts Department and aims to build a strong pool of AI-trained personnel across Indian Railways.

The programme has already covered 216 officials, comprising 47 officers and 169 staff, through four batches. The training architecture has been designed for different levels of the Accounts cadre, combining offline programmes at the NeGD Learning Space at NOIDA with online sessions. The programmes cover AI fundamentals and tools, emerging applications, legal and policy aspects including the DPDP Act, infrastructure requirements, demonstrations of government use-cases and proof-of-concept initiatives.

A key feature of the programme is its focus on moving beyond awareness towards practical application. Training for officers includes a dedicated component for identifying and developing AI use-cases relevant to their work. The proposed use-cases are being consolidated for further evaluation and potential piloting and scale-up.

The initiative builds on a pilot conducted in April 2026 for Accounts and Finance officials from Northern Railway and has subsequently been expanded across Railway Units. From June 2026 onwards, training batches of up to 60 staff are planned monthly, with a target of training around 500 officials during FY 2026-27.

In parallel, the Accounts Directorate has undertaken the iGOT Karmayogi capacity-building initiative for IT cadre staff across Indian Railways. As reported in the note, 1,662 certificates had already been received from the IT cadre, with further participation expected.

The initiative represents an important step towards creating an AI-aware and AI-ready Accounts cadre, enabling officers and staff to identify opportunities for technology-led efficiency and contribute to the development and implementation of practical AI applications across Indian Railways.
