IRAS DAY–2017 Celebrations : Chennai Chapter
The IRAS fraternity of Southern Railway and Integral Coach Factory, organized IRAS day celebrations 2017 of the Chennai chapter on 25.11.2017. 78 retired and serving officers
Including former FCs attended the event.
The event began with a musical invocation consisting of Slokas culled from the Upanishads in praise of the divine power. These were rendered in a ragamalika by Smt. MeeraVijayaraj, Sr.AFA/CN. This was followed by the traditional lighting of Kuthuvilaku or traditional lamp by senior lady officers of the IRAS family. The meeting began after observing a minute of silence as a mark of respect to Late Dr. V. Chandrashekar Rao and Vivek Kumar Singh, whom the IRAS fraternity lost in the previous year.
Kick starting the event, Smt. Manjula Rangarajan, PFA of Southern Railway welcomed the gathering to the celebrations. The warmth and camaraderie of her address set the tone for the day!
The celebration of the IRAS day would not have been complete without honoring the seniors, who had handed over the baton to the younger lot setting such high standards to cherish and live up to in the service. Retired senior officers of IRAS family, who had made exemplary contribution to the Organization and the Service- Shri. P.V.Vasudevan, Shri B.C.Balasubramanian, and Shri N.Gopalakrishnan were felicitated. Their juniors in the service who had the privilege of long personal and professional associations with them felicitated them.
This was followed by an extremely erudite and engaging talk on ‘Infrastructural Transformation and India’s Economic Development – The Elephant in the Room!’ by Scholar and Professor in Economics Dr. Sunder Ramaswamy, Vice Chancellor, Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai. He is well known for his works in international and developmental economics in India, Africa and other parts of the third world.
The session highlighted the last two decades of changes and transformation in the Indian economy, infrastructure sector in particular and discussed at length the comparative position in investment and creation of infrastructure across nations and its pivotal role in economic development across the globe. Specific reference to the railways and the central role it plays in the Infrastructure Story of the country, simultaneously throwing light on the failures and strides made in this juggernaut of development was the crux of the talk. The takeaways were specific pointers that policy makers had to keep in view while formulating directional goals on this crucial arterial system of the economy! This was followed by a lively interaction session.
The Celebration of 88 years of Propriety, Proficiency, and Productivity of the Indian Railway Accounts Service signed off with a Signature Photo session where senior stalwarts and budding entrants stood shoulder to shoulder in a picture frame etched in sweet memory!
Smt.Selvalakshmi Dy. CAO (G) of Southern Railway proposed the vote of thanks.
The session closed with rendering of the National anthem followed by lunch.
